From the "Anatomy of the Lake" series.

"By drawing on ancient or neo-classical statuary, I aim to question the representation of the human body while exploring the notion of time and ruin. Beyond their beauty, what interests me most is the idea of wound. By painting these broken, amputated bodies, I seek to evoke human suffering and fragility. Moreover, the fact that these statues have endured through the centuries adds an ambivalence to the work. We are faced with objects that are both fragile and remarkably resistant to time. These wounds, these missing limbs, fascinate me. There is something in the destruction of these idealized bodies that transcends representation and deeply moves me." - Erwann Tirilly
